BOTOX® & Juvederm- Which is right for you?

BOTOX® and injectable fillers such as  and Juvéderm top the list of most popular non-surgical anti-aging treatments in Canada

Despite the economic slow down, individuals are choosing to invest in their appearance. Each year marks a further incline in non-surgical cosmetic procedures. In 2012 in comparison to 2011, BOTOX® represented an 8% increase, and there was a 5% increase in soft dermal tissue fillers. As well,  the number of men having BOTOX® was up 27% from 2011, with hyaluronic acid fillers and micro-dermabrasion also among the most popular maintenance treatments.

So why are more and more individuals choosing cosmetics to enhance their appearance than ever before?

We could certainly blame the influx of social media and photo sharing for creating more awareness of our appearances or it could simply be that treatment is more accessible, less taboo and since its not just the latex faced celebrities like Joan Rivers admitting to cosmetic treatments, the more natural results that are typically seen- create a curiosity in the aging individual.

But what is the difference between BOTOX® and Juvederm? What do I need?

BOTOX® is an injection of a purified protein with a very fine needle that targets areas such as crows feet, frown lines, forehead creases, and glabellar lines but can also be used to lift brows and uplift the corners of the mouth.

BOTOX® typically lasts approximately 3-4 months but results can linger longer with repeated treatments. BOTOX® works by inhibiting the ability for the muscle to contract thus creating a wrinkle.

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid that is injected in to areas such as nasolabial folds, which are the “parentheses lines” which extend from the outer edge of the nostrils to the corners of the mouth, marionette lines (below the corners of the mouth), the lips, the cheeks, the nose, and along the jawline. Juvederm is best for restoring volume in the face that has been lost due to aging. There are currently a large variety of Juvederm products that we used depending on what needs to be done. The effects vary from 8 months to 18 months and give a very natural result.

The amount of BOTOX® or Juvederm you may need is completely different to each individual. The treatment provided to younger individuals for preventative maintenance is much less than to an individual who is older with very deep lines, loss of volume etc.

Compared to 2011, this represents an 8% increase, a larger jump compared to the 5% increase in soft dermal tissue fillers.
